HOW IS BALANCED CHOICES DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SIMILAR PROGRAMS?
  • Training is Key. We are committed to delivering accurate nutrition information about menu choices to our customers.  Chefs and Managers at each locations must complete a 10 hour basic nutrition class, passing all exams with a score of 100% before the program is launched at their location. Additional hands on culinary training is conducted by Regional Chefs and all associates must complete the Balanced Choices program training.
  • We have invested in a full year of extensive recipe development to support our menu icon system.  We understand one program simply cannot "fit all".  Our healthy recipes database contains over 1000 fully analzed selections with an emphasis on flavors from all regions of the US.
  • And finally, Balanced Choices is not merely a slick marketing campaign.  Integration into our client's community culture, health, nutrition and wellness iniatives is our goal.

 BALANCED CHOICE ICONS ARE LISTED BELOW:

 Balanced Choice Is A Program Devoted To Helping Diners Make Healthier Choices.  Meal options that fit into these categories are labeled with a corresponding icon to simplify dining decisions.

600 calories or less per serving 30% or less calories from fat per serving
Exception: up to 35% calories from fat per serving for select items containing “healthy” (omega-3) fats including some fish, soy items such as tofu, tempeh and seitan and items containing nuts and/or seeds; 80mg or less of cholesterol per serving
Exception: up to 85mg cholesterol per serving for solid poultry entrees; 600mg or less of sodium per serving

 

Item contains no meat, fish, poultry, shellfish or products derived from these sources, but may contain dairy or eggs. Vegetarian items may or may not be FIT.

 

No meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese or other dairy products or animal by-product (such as honey) may be used. Vegan items may or may not be FIT.

 
Item must contain less than 12 grams of carbohydrate per serving.  
Whole grain, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein and healthy fat.  
Dish meets all criteria for sustainable seafood as determined by the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

 What Are SuperFoods?    

Provide scientific based evidence of health benefits beyond vitamins and minerals. 

        A superfood is a food rich in phytochemicals, which are special chemicals that have beed noted to have disease-fighting properties.  Phytochemicals can reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer, reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system, or in some other way contribute to a person being healthier.  When foods are high in these phytochemicals, they may be eaten not only because they taste good, BUT because they are GOOD FOR YOU TOO!

Examples of superfoods

Blueberries, cranberries, red grapes, pink grapefruit, mangos, mangosteen, papaya, watermelons and tomatoes.

What makes these fruits so super is that they are packed with special nutrients, the phytochemicals mentioned above.

     For example, tomatoes are high in lycopene, which may reduce risk for prostate cancer, and high in beta carotene, which may promote greater mental alertness and slow conditions like Alzheimers.  Vitamin C is another nutrient indicated in anti-aging and possible reduction in risk of developing cancer.  With the exception of a few of the rarer foods on the superfood list, you'll tend to provide yourself with a wealth of phytonutrients by eating a diet rich in dietary fiber that includes plenty of fruits & vegetables.  In fact, it would be a mistake to limit your consumption to only the foods on the superfood list, since other valuable nutrients could be missed if you do.  A well-rounded diet, with perhaps a few superfoods added is probably one of the most nutritious ways to eat.  Don't forget to allow yourself the occasional piece of chocolate cake and even a cup of coffee, since both of these are derived from superfoods as well!

There are a number of superfoods, many of them derived from vegetables or fruit.  Suprisingly, there are a few superfoods that wouldn't be things you normally just sit down and eat alone.  For instance, cocoa is considered a superfood because it contains flavinoids, which have antioxidant properties.  You wouldn't probably eat raw cocoa powder, but it may be nice to know that your chocolate bar may be both anti-aging and delicious.

 There are plenty of vegetables that are definitely worthy of the title "SUPERFOOD".

 

  • You'll find high amounts of different phytochemicals in many leafy green vegetables.
  • Grains and other food additives are also considered super - soybeans, flax seed and quinoa are good examples.
  • Garlic, aloe vera, honey, and any foods thought to have probiotics qualities may also be classed as superfood.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Sustainable Agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, is humane for workers and animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC

There are many organizations worldwide that certify produce as being grown in a manner that does not harm the environment and that preserves or improves soil fertility, soil structure , and farm sustainability.

ORGANIC FOOD

Most people are aware that organically grown food is free from exposure to harmful chemicals, but that is only one small part of what organic is about.  A larger part of organic agriculture involves the health of the soil and the ecosystems in which crops and livestock are raised.  Organic agriculture is born from the idea that a healthy environment significantly benefits crops and the health of those consuming them.  In addition, organic practices are also viable in the long term, since they are efficient in their use of resources, and do not damage the environment and local communities lke large scale "chemical agriculture" does.

USDA "100 PERCENT ORGANIC" VERSUS "ORGANIC"

Products labeled "organic" must consist of at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt).  Any remaining product ingredients must consist of non agricultureal substances approved on the National List or non-organically produced agricultural products that are not commercially available in organic form.

 Products meeting the requirements for "100 percent organic" and "organic" may display these terms and the percentage of organic content on their principal display panel.

The USDA seal and the seal or mark of involved certifying agents may appear on product packaging and in advertisements.

Foods labeled "100 percent organic" and "organic" cannot be produced using excluded methods, sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation.

FAIR TRADE
                                         
The Fair Trade Federation (FTF) is the trade association that strengthens and promotes North American organizations fully committed to fair trade. The Federation is part of the global fair trade movement, building equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creating opportunities to alleviate poverty.

Fair trade certification is a market-based model of international trade that benefits over one million farmers and farm workers in 58 developing countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. Fair Trade certification enables consumers to vote for a better world with their dollars, simply by looking for the Fair Trade Certified label on the products they buy.

Fair Trade Certification agricultural products including coffee, tea and herbs, cocoa and chocolate, fresh fruit, sugar, rice, and spices (vanilla) are currently available at over 35,000 retail establishments in the U.S.

Fair Trade empowers farmers and farm workers to lift themselves our of poverty by developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.  By guaranteeing minimum floor prices and social premiums, Fair Trade enables produces to invest in their farms and communities and protect the environment.

For a product to display FAIRTRADE MARK, it must meet International Fairtrade standards.  These standards are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO). www.fairtrade.org

Human Farm Animal Care (HFAC)

In the United States, more than 95% of the nearly 300 million laying hens are confined to barren battery cages, unable even to spread their wings or engage in many other natural behaviors, such as nesting, foraging, perching, and dust bathing.  Cage-free shell eggs means the hens have not been confined to a battery cage.

Certified Humane Raised & Handled

The certified Humane Raised & Handled Label is a consumer certification and labeling program.  When you see the Certified Humane Raised & Handled label it means that an egg, dairy, meat or poultry product has been produced with the welfare of the farm animal in mind.  Food products that carry the label are certified to have come from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment.
